Somo is a classic beach break extending over several kilometers, with multiple peaks formed by dynamic sandbanks. The waves offer a mix of lefts and rights, with generally medium-length rides and workable sections that vary depending on bank formation and swell direction.

The central area provides the most consistent peaks, suitable for beginners and intermediates on smaller swell. East along the same beach system, Loredo can offer more exposed peaks depending on the sandbanks.

Wave behavior is variable but consistent in frequency, with the open exposure ensuring regular surf. Larger swells bring increased power and current, while smaller days offer softer, more forgiving conditions across the beach.

The main surf season runs from September through April, when North Atlantic W to NW swells are most frequent and consistent. During this period, wave size and quality increase across the region.

Wind patterns are typically W–NW onshore or cross-shore, with occasional offshore S–SE winds creating cleaner conditions. Early mornings and brief wind windows offer the best surface quality before wind influence increases.

Access to the beach is straightforward, with multiple entry points, parking areas, and a ferry connection from Santander city center. Most surf zones are reachable on foot once in Somo.

    Local Vibe

Somo has a relaxed but active surf culture, with a mix of local surfers, surf schools, and visiting riders. The long beach allows for distribution across peaks, reducing intensity compared to more confined breaks.

The atmosphere is relaxed and surf-focused, with a strong local surf community and steady activity throughout the year.

The best banks near the main beach accesses and surf schools can become crowded, while walking farther along the beach often provides more space.
